Playing tips

If you have any further enquiries relating to playing tips, please contact us and request to speak to your child's visiting Durham Music Service teacher.

Practice

Expand

It is important that your child has regular practice, even a short time is better for your child than one long session just before their lesson. Ten minutes may be enough for a young child. Your child's Durham Music Service teacher will be able to give you guidance on this.

You may want to try asking your child to make up some music off the top of their head using some of the notes that
they know. They may have done this in a lesson, but could feel less nervous about trying it at home. This will help your child be creative, and also avoid any worry about playing wrong notes.

Encourage

Expand

We recommend that you encourage your child's music journey and listen to them playing or singing as often as you can. Positive feed back can really help boost a child's confidence, this is reflected well during their performances.

Many instruments sound far from beautiful when played by a beginner. Children need all the praise and encouragement that you can give them. Make your child feel that you are enjoying their music, and be tactful about any imperfections. It's important to remember not to expect too much in the early stages.

You should encourage your child to join an ensemble. Durham Music Service offers FREE access to a vast
range of ensembles.

Make sure child receives the best out of their lessons

Expand

We ask that you encourage your child to take their instrument to their music lessons, it is important that lessons are fulfilled each week. It may be useful for you to contact your child's school and confirm your child's music timetable.
