How do we pay?

Expand

If your child begins lessons in the first half of a term and can have eight or more lessons we will send you an invoice as soon as possible for that term's lessons. If your child begins lessons in the second half of a term and cannot receive eight lessons we will not charge you for that term.

You will normally receive an invoice for lessons in September, December and April. The invoice is for the current term's lessons and the invoice will be sent by post. The full list of payment options available to you can be found on the reverse of your invoice. If you would like to pay by direct debit please contact us and we can arrange to send you a direct debit mandate form, alternatively you can visit our Reports and Policies page, print out the direct debit form and send the completed form to Durham Music Service. We guarantee your child will be offered at least 24 lessons in a full school year (3 terms - September to July) and we aim to provide 30 lessons.

You have the option to pay your invoice in instalments, please note monies owed must arrive in our Durham County Councils bank account before the fifteenth of each month. Failure to meet the instalment date will result in the full amount owed to be paid immediately.

Please note that if your child is unable to attend a lesson for any reason outside the control of Durham Music Service (e.g. school trip, illness, exams, forgotten instrument) this will count towards the guaranteed 24 lessons.

How lessons work

Expand

We offer lessons in most schools across County Durham and Darlington. Lessons include

  • Brass e.g. trumpet, cornet, horn, trombone
  • Woodwind e.g. flute, clarinet, saxophone
  • String Lessons e.g. violin, viola, cello
  • Percussion e.g. drum kit
  • Guitar
  • Singing

Lessons usually take place within the school day and pupils will need to leave subject lessons to attend. Lessons are usually on a rota (a different time each week) so that pupils are not missing the same subject each week. Schools support this and encourage pupils to attend music lessons.

Being able to play an instrument or to sing will stay with your child for the rest of their lives. Playing and singing will not only increase their understanding and enjoyment of music it can also:

  • Help social skills
  • Build teamwork
  • Increase self-confidence
  • Give opportunities to perform
  • Be a fulfilling hobby that can open up new opportunities
  • Give children a head start in music lessons, from Primary school to GCSE, AS and A Level
Playing an instrument or singing does require commitment - it helps to build resilience and 'stickability'. Students need to bring their instrument or equipment to lessons and will need to play or sing regularly at home. Your support and encouragement will help if there are times when they will find it difficult. The early stages may not always sound wonderful but your child will be making musical progress and learning all the time!

    Instrument Purchase Scheme

    Expand

Thinking about buying instead of hiring?

Once your child is registered with Durham Music Service you can buy an instrument through our instrument purchase scheme – you will not pay VAT and prices are heavily discounted. Unfortunately, this excludes drum kits. We do not make a profit from this scheme and the instrument models available have been tried by our teachers. Your child’s teacher can offer advice on a suitable instrument and give you details about the scheme. If you would like to know more information about prices or to request a call from your child's visiting Durham Music Service teacher please contact us.

    Percussion

    Expand

If you child has registered for percussion lessons, they will need a pair of drum sticks to commence lessons and these will need to be replaced as required. Drum sticks are not expensive and are available from the following:

If your child does not have access to a drum kit at home they may find it useful to have a drum practice pad – these are available from the same outlets. It is important that your child uses the correct size of drum stick. Please contact us and ask your child’s Durham Music Service Teacher for guidance on the right size for your child.

      Instrument Hire

      Expand

We have a wide variety of instruments available to hire including:

      • Brass instruments
      • Woodwind instruments
      • String instruments

Please visit our pricing page for information on prices.

We'd like to make parents/carers aware that they are responsible for the instruments that are hired for their children, we are a not for profit, self sufficient service, for this reason, if any damages are caused or if the instrument is lost or stolen, you will be charged for the repairs or replacement.

We recommend you have adequate insurance cover for the instrument that you are hiring. Instruments will often be covered by household ‘contents’ policies or they can be insured separately through specialist insurance policies.
